A Road Trip to Remember: Discovering the Magic of the Florida Keys
It was an early Saturday morning when I decided to escape the bustle of Miami and hit the road. The sun was just starting to rise, casting a golden hue over the city as I cruised down US-1. The excitement of leaving behind the familiar for the unknown had me eagerly anticipating the miles ahead.
As I passed through Key Largo, I couldn’t resist pulling over at a small, unassuming seafood shack I’d heard about from a friend. Freshly caught grouper sandwich in hand, I sat by the water, savoring the simple, yet exquisite flavors that can only be found in the Keys. With the sound of waves gently lapping against the dock, I felt the stress of the city melt away.
Continuing down the Overseas Highway, the Seven Mile Bridge came into view—a stretch of road that feels like you’re driving on the ocean itself. The endless expanse of turquoise water on both sides was breathtaking. I rolled down the windows, letting the salty breeze fill the car, and simply marveled at the beauty surrounding me. Plus, I made sure to wave to #FredTheTree as I passed!
Midway through my journey, I decided to take a detour to Bahia Honda State Park. The beaches here are some of the most pristine in the Keys, and as I walked along the shore, I found a secluded spot where I could just sit and enjoy the blue/green waters. It was one of those rare moments where time seemed to stand still, and all that mattered was the serenity of the moment.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Key West. The vibrant streets were alive with music, laughter, and the scent of delicious food wafting through the air. I ended my day at Mallory Square, watching the sun dip below the horizon in a blaze of colors—a sight that felt like a fitting end to a day filled with spontaneous discoveries and peaceful reflection.
This road trip wasn’t just about reaching a destination; it was about the journey itself—each stop, each interaction, each view that reminded me why the Florida Keys are a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered.

Here’s How to Care for Key Limes in the Florida Keys
Key limes are a cherished symbol of the Florida Keys, and whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, growing and caring for these citrus treasures can be incredibly rewarding. This week, we’re sharing some expert tips on how to keep your Key lime trees healthy and productive, straight from the locals who know them best.
1. Location is Everything:
Key lime trees thrive in full sunlight and well-drained soil, so make sure to plant them in a sunny spot where they can soak up plenty of rays. If you’re growing your tree in a container, be sure it has ample drainage to prevent root rot.
2. Watering Wisely:
While Key lime trees love sunlight, they also need consistent watering, especially during the hotter months. However, be careful not to overwater. The trick is to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. A good rule of thumb is to water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between watering sessions.
3. Fertilize for Success:
Feeding your Key lime tree with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer is key to ensuring healthy growth and fruit production. Look for a fertilizer specifically designed for citrus trees, and apply it according to the package instructions, usually every 6-8 weeks during the growing season.
4. Pruning and Protection:
Pruning is essential to maintaining the shape and health of your Key lime tree. Trim away any dead or damaged branches, and don’t be afraid to thin out the canopy to allow sunlight to penetrate and air to circulate. Also, be mindful of protecting your tree from pests like aphids and citrus leaf miners, which can be managed with regular inspection and organic treatments if necessary.
5. Patience Pays Off:
Growing Key limes can take time, especially if you’re starting from seed. Patience is key (pun intended!), but once your tree starts bearing fruit, you’ll be rewarded with the freshest, juiciest Key limes you could ever imagine.
Not only are Key limes a delicious addition to your kitchen, but they also add a touch of authentic Florida Keys charm to your garden. Whether you’re making the perfect Key lime pie or simply enjoying a slice in a cold drink, there’s nothing like the taste of homegrown Key limes.
