A Perfect Day’s Journey to Key West
Dear Road Trippers,
Welcome back to another edition of Florida Keys Road Trip! This week, we’re diving headfirst into one of the most iconic drives in America: the breathtaking journey down U.S. 1 to Key West. Buckle up, because we’re stopping at a few must-see spots along the way, from a visit with some VIP turtles to the world’s best lunch-with-a-view, and wrapping it up at the end of the road—literally.
The Adventure Begins: Heading South on the Overseas Highway
The minute you leave the mainland and start cruising over that sparkling, endless stretch of highway, you know you’re in for something special. The Overseas Highway isn't just a road; it's a ribbon of concrete suspended between sea and sky, with turquoise water on either side. Every mile brings you closer to paradise. But why rush? Let’s make the most of this journey with a few stops that are as unforgettable as the drive itself.
Stop 1: The Turtle Hospital (Mile Marker 48.5, Marathon)
First up, a little detour that’s as heartwarming as it is educational. The Turtle Hospital in Marathon is a must-visit for animal lovers and anyone who wants to learn about marine conservation. This rescue center rehabilitates injured sea turtles and, if you're lucky, you might even witness a turtle release back into the wild. It’s a great way to start the day—because who doesn’t want to see a sea turtle up close?

Stop 2: Lunch at Sunset Grille & Raw Bar (Mile Marker 47, Marathon)
After bonding with our shelled friends, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Just down the road, the Sunset Grille & Raw Bar offers the perfect pit stop for a laid-back lunch with incredible views. Overlooking the famous 7 Mile Bridge, this spot serves up everything from fresh seafood to a solid burger, and the ocean breeze pairs well with any meal. And hey, you’re in the Keys—why not indulge in some conch fritters?

Stop 3: A Walk on the Old Bahia Honda Bridge (Mile Marker 37)
Now that you’re fueled up, it’s time for a walk with a view. Bahia Honda State Park is known for its pristine beaches, but it’s the Old Bahia Honda Bridge that steals the show. Take a quick hike up to the bridge's highest point for panoramic views of the Atlantic and Gulf waters blending into each other. It’s a perfect place to snap a photo, stretch your legs, and maybe even question whether you really need to head back home later.

Final Stop: Key West & Mile Marker 0

Mile Marker 0 - Key West
After winding through the scenic beauty of the lower Keys, you’ll finally roll into Key West, the quirky, colorful gem at the end of the road. Be sure to stop at the legendary Mile Marker 0 for the classic “I made it!” photo-op. After all, how many places can you say you’ve literally driven to the end of the road?
Once you're in Key West, the rest is up to you. Maybe you'll wander through the lively streets of Old Town, visit Ernest Hemingway’s home, or toast the sunset at Mallory Square. Whatever you do, one thing's for sure—you’ve made it to paradise.
The Journey’s End
The drive down to Key West is as much about the journey as the destination. From stopping to save a turtle’s life, to indulging in fresh seafood while overlooking the sea, to standing at the southernmost tip of the U.S., this road trip is one for the memory books.
Until next time, safe travels, happy driving, and enjoy the island life!
Warm regards,
Brian
